- Sow: February – June (under cover or outdoors)
- Harvest: About 12 weeks after sowing
- Soil: Well‑drained, fertile, moist soil
- Aspect: Full sun to partial shade
- Indoors: Sow seeds on the surface of fine compost and lightly cover; keep at moderate warmth (around 14 °C) until germination.
- Outdoors: Sow direct in shallow drills (1.5 cm deep) from April onwards, keeping rows around 30 cm (12″) apart.
- Spacing: Thin seedlings as they grow, or pull young shoots as needed for salad.
Keep soil evenly moist and weed‑free while seedlings establish. Successional sowing every few weeks encourages a steady spring onion supply through spring into autumn.
