Dogwoods are superb plants for winter drama. The mid-green foliage of Cornus sanguinea Magic Flame turns bright red in autumn and drops to reveal bright orange, red and yellow winter stems. Flat, dense clusters of white flowers in summer are followed by spherical, blue-black fruit.

Insights

A stunning plant for the winter and early spring garden, it is best cultivated in a moist position and is ideal for water gardens, looking superb reflected in ponds. Plant in a large pot for dramatic effect, or position in a row as a hedge or to line a path. Is a recipient of the RHS AGM (Award of Garden Merit), for all round excellence in the garden.

Care

It is a low maintenance shrub, but the plants can become woody with age, so for great winter colour it is advisable to prune almost to the ground each March, although you will sacrifice the berries. (A solution is to prune a third of the stems back each year.) The new shoots grow quickly, however! It spreads by suckering.
