From Ted to Tom: The Illustrated Envelopes of Edward Gorey
Tom Fitzharris met artist Edward Gorey in 1974 after buying one of his drawings, the pair striking up an immediate friendship. In the following year Gorey sent a total of 50 letters to Fitzharris. The renowned author and illustrator shared news, opinions, quotes and jokes, covering his envelopes with pen and ink drawings and filling them with surprises. Presented here for the first time, the envelopes and messages reveal a friendship full of humour, imagination and gossip, with an introduction by Tom Fitzharris and his notes at the back of the book, referencing the correspondence.

Edward Gorey (1925-2000) born in Chicago, was a writer, illustrator, and Tony Award-winning costume designer. He studied briefly at the Art Institute of Chicago before attending Harvard College to study French literature. In 1953 Gorey published ‘The Unstrung Harp’, the first of his many books, which include ‘The Curious Sofa’, ‘The Haunted Tea-Cosy', and ‘The Epiplectic Bicycle’. He illustrated many other books for adults and children, in his trademark eccentric, funny, slightly Gothic style, and won awards for his stage and costume designs.
Tom Fitzharris was a close friend of Edward Gorey in the 1970s. He currently lives in New York City and gives tours at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
