This tall dusky cranesbill, G. phaeum Samobor, is an upright hardy perennial. In late spring and early summer sprays of slightly nodding, dark burgundy-purple flowers with recurved petals are held aloft above the handsome mound of leaves. The flowers are attractive to pollinating insects.

An excellent plant for partial shade, especially in dry conditions, it also tolerates full shade and full sun. It self-seeds prolifically and is a tall species so may need some support. Found growing in the damp woods of Croatia, it is named after the Croatian town Samobor.
