- Sow: April – August
- Harvest: May- September
- Soil: Fertile, moist, well‑drained
- Aspect: Full sun to partial shade
- Sowing: Sow thinly where they are to crop, about 1.5 cm (½″) deep into finely prepared soil. Rows should be spaced about 30 cm (12″) apart. Once seedlings appear, thin plants to about 25–30 cm (10–12″) apart to allow room for round heads to develop.
Keep well watered during dry spells and free of weeds to encourage crisp, well‑formed heads. Starting some sowings earlier under cover and transplanting into vacant spaces can extend the season. For a milder flavour, blanching (loosely covering the forming head) reduces bitterness.
