- Sow: March – September (direct or under cover)
- Harvest: Approx. 10–12 weeks after sowing
- Soil: Moist, fertile, well‑drained soil
- Aspect: Full sun to light shade
- Under cover: Sow in pots, trays or modules of seed compost at 15–20 °C, covering lightly with vermiculite or fine compost.
- Outdoors: Sow thinly in shallow drills 1.5 cm (½″) deep in a fine seedbed; rows about 30 cm (12″) apart.
- Transplant under‑cover seedlings when large enough, spacing 30 cm (12″) apart.
Keep soil evenly moist, especially during dry spells, to maintain tender growth and reduce bitterness. For a milder heart and self‑blanching effect, tie the outer leaves together as heads form — or cover with a pot to exclude light and promote blanched hearts. Regular thinning ensures good air circulation and healthy plants.
