- Sow: March – April (or early under cover for earlier transplants)
- Plant Out: After risk of frost has passed (typically April – May)
- Harvest: Autumn – Winter (often November – December)
- Soil: Deep, fertile, well‑drained soil enriched with compost
- Aspect: Full sun to light shade
- Sowing: Sow seeds thinly in shallow drills about 1 cm deep in March – April.
- Spacing: Transplant seedlings at about 15 cm (6″) apart with 30 cm (12″) between rows once plants are pencil‑thick.
Leeks benefit from consistent moisture and hilling up soil around stems during growth to blanch the white shank. Keep beds weed‑free and water well in dry weather. Protect transplants from very cold spells with fleece if needed. Regular side dressing with compost or balanced fertiliser encourages strong stems.
