- Sow: May - July
- Harvest: June - September (about 10 weeks after sowing)
- Soil: Well‑drained, fertile, moist soil encourages crisp growth.
- Aspect: Full sun or light shade, especially in warmer months.
- Sowing: Sow seeds thinly in shallow drills about 2 cm deep, spacing rows approx. 30–35 cm apart. Once seedlings are established, thin to 30–35 cm (12–14″) between plants for head development, or pick as loose leaves at closer spacing.
Keep beds weed‑free and consistently moist, especially in dry spells, as lettuce roots are shallow and sensitive to drought. Sow successional batches every few weeks to maintain a continuous supply. Protect early and late sowings with cloches or fleece to extend the season.
