- Sow: May – June (under cover or direct)
- Plant Out: June – July (after hardening off)
- Harvest: September – October
- Soil: Firm, fertile, well‑drained
- Aspect: Full sun to partial shade
Sowing:
- Start seeds in trays or modules under cover at around 13 °C, or
- Sow outdoors in shallow drills (~2 cm deep) once the risk of hard frost has passed.
Spacing: Once established, space plants ~45 cm (18″) apart with ~60 cm (24″) between rows.
Harden off seedlings gradually before planting out. Keep soil consistently moist, especially during curd formation, as drought stress can lead to small button heads. Protect young plants from pests such as cabbage white butterflies with fine mesh if necessary. Harvest when curds are firm and compact before they begin to open.
