- Sow: September - April
- Flowers: June - September
- Hardy annuals
- Soil: Well‑drained, fertile soil
- Aspect: Full sun to light shade
- Autumn sowings (Sept–Nov): Sow 2 cm deep into the flowering site; you can also sow into modules or deep pots to over‑winter in a cold frame.
- Spring sowings (Jan–Apr): Sow indoors in deep modules or trays, or direct in situ once frost risk has passed.
- Provide canes, trellis or netting for climbing stems; space plants about 15 cm (6″) apart.
Sweet peas benefit from regular watering and a sunny, sheltered position. Pinching out growing tips when plants reach around 15cm (6in) encourages branching and more flowers. Pick blooms frequently, this not only rewards you with fragrant stems but also encourages fresh flowering into late season.
