notes

Bearing long-lasting exotic blooms that can flower at any time of year, this Phalaenopsis (or moth) orchid makes a striking addition to the home, thriving in warm conditions and filtered light. With two tall, arching stems and leathery leaves, the orchid brings elegant vertical interest, while its pink-toned petals and honey-tipped lip add delicate colour and sophistication.

Insights

Native to India, southern China, and Southeast Asia, the Phalaenopsis orchid naturally grows on other plants rather than in soil. Don’t worry if some roots appear to be clambering out of the pot, these aerial roots absorb moisture from the air and are a normal part of the plant’s growth.

Details
  • Frost tender
  • Pot size: Height: 15cm (6in)
  • Soil: Use a loose, airy, bark based orchid mix.
  • Position: Bright light but keep out of direct summer sun
  • Keep out of draughts and away from radiators and heaters – it enjoys steady, consistent warmth so avoid big drops in temperature over night
  • Supplied with terracotta pot cover with drainage hole
Care
  • Water every 1-2 weeks (allow potting mix to dry out between watering) with rainwater or tepid water, avoiding leaves and crown. The key to caring for orchids is not to allow the roots to get too wet or too dry, so do not leave them sitting in water.
  • Re-pot every two years as structure of orchid mix deteriorates
  • After flowering, cut the flower stalk down to just above the second node beneath the flowers, to encourage new flower stem formation
