The achingly pretty, single blooms of Helleborus Ice N Roses White appear in profusion in December. Five-petalled, with a wonderful fringe of yellow stamens, the open heads of the flowers are forward facing and create a gratifying spectacle. As the flowers mature, they take on a greenish tinge which beautifully complements spring bulbs such as muscari or narcissus.

All hellebores have been carefully bred from the Christmas or Lenten Roses (Helleborus niger), to produce exceptionally robust varieties that flourish in our climate. The beautifully marked ‘petals’ are sepals (the petals modified to become nectaries), which is why the flowers last for so long, in this case well into and past Christmas.

  • Harmful if eaten, may cause skin allergy
  • Flowers: late November onwards
  • Moist, well drained soil
  • Partial shade

Leave foliage to protect the young buds, but as the hellebore flowers, remove the old foliage to reveal the blooms, this looks attractive and helps to prevent disease. Top dress with fertiliser in autumn.
