Hydrangea arborescens Sweet Annabelle is a variety of the understandably popular Annabelle family of hydrangeas, with the same firework explosion of florets, but in this case in a blaze of deepest pink. The result is dazzling, but rather than a flat colour, each floret appears to have been flooded with colour from behind, creating a visual depth, shading from deepest red to cream. The fresh, attractively veined foliage offsets the ruby colour and because it is compact in habit, this hydrangea can be planted in multiples to create a glorious, low hedge.

In a botanical tour de force, as unlikely as bumble bees flying, the huge flowering heads of Annabelle hydrangeas are held aloft without dropping (as long as they are not thirsty).
