Features

notes
Sarcococca ruscifolia Chinensis ‘Dragon’s Gate is a joy in the winter. Plant this delightful and compact evergreen shrub in a container by the front door or along a frequented path and the scent it emits in late winter will reward you. Hardy and undemanding, it prefers to be in the shade and sheltered. Decorative but inedible red berries appear in late spring.
Insights

This variety is a comparatively recent find by the journalist and plantsman Roy Lanacaster who discovered the shrub in 1980, while travelling in the hills above Yunnan in China. All sarcococca benefit pollinators by being in flower so unusually early. A recipient of the RHS AGM (Award of Garden Merit), for all round excellence in the garden.

Details
  • Flowers: December onwards followed by shiny red berries which are purely ornamental and not to be eaten.
Planting
  • Moist, well drained soil
  • Shade or partial shade preferred

Care

Because this is a suckering shrub, it will spread by shooting suckers from its base. Remove these by pruning in the spring and apply a good layer of well rotted mulch or compost around the base.
