notes

With tall stems and bold flowers, an amaryllis is a popular winter flowering bulb, adding colour and dramatic impact to any indoor setting. This set includes a perfectly snug terracotta pot, compost pellet and one amaryllis bulb ready for planting. A tender plant, this bulb will need temperatures to be a steady 20-25°C to trigger growth. Bearing large, pale pink trumpet flowers, this Cherry Blossom bulb will add a striking accent to your winter home.

Insights

Native to South America, the plant derives from the genus Hippeastrum, the same family as daffodils and snowdrops. Some say that Amaryllis is named after the nymph in Virgil’s ‘Eclogues’, who, in love with the gardener Alteo, pierced her heart with a golden arrow and the striking red flower that blossomed in her drops of blood was given her name.

The Set
  • One terracotta pot
  • One peat-free compost pellet
  • One amaryllis bulb
Details
  • Flowers: Winter to spring
  • Tender
Planting
  • October- January
  • Plant 6-8 weeks before you want it to bloom

Making the compost:

  • Place the peat-free compost pellet into a suitable mixing container and add 350ml of lukewarm water. Allow to stand and expand for 30-60minutes, drain off any excess water and mix compost well. You may have more compost than you require and more water could be required if the compost mix is looking dry.

How to plant:

  • Half fill the pot with compost. Place the bulb in the pot and fill with more compost so that the upper third of the bulb is showing. Keep the compost moist by watering around the edge of the bulb. Place in a warm, light position.
Care
  • Once the flower buds are showing, water regularly, being careful not to overwater. To lengthen the flowering time, once the flowers start to show, move the pot to a cooler position. Turn occasionally ass the flowers grow towards the light. The stems may need support. Do not allow compost to dry out.
  • Store in a cool dry place until ready to plant
