Restrained in terms of size, Malus Evereste is a delightful small tree to plant for interest across the seasons. In spring, a profusion of red buds open into pretty, pink-washed, single white flowers, followed by glossy green foliage. In early autumn a mass of coppery orange crab apples appear, against yellow foliage for use in the kitchen or for the hungry birds.

Insights
This award-winning tree was bred in France in 1978 by the INRA, an institute developed to promote sustainable agriculture. It fulfils many of their criteria: once established it is drought tolerant, it tolerates pollution, is an excellent pollinator and gives shelter and food to winter birds. A recipient of the RHS AGM (Award of Garden Merit), for all round excellence.

- From March to April the tree is covered with a profusion of typically pretty apple blossom
- Autumn foliage is golden yellow
- Pot size: approx. 10–12L, Height and Spread: 7m (23ft) x 6m (20ft) after 10-20 years
Planting
- Well drained, fertile soil
- South or West facing
- Full sun, partial shade

Care
Water well until established. Clear grass or weeds from around the base of young tree. Hard pruning is unnecessary, avoid cutting the tips of the branches, but remove dead, damaged or diseased branches and any water sprouts that appear.
Scent
Depending on the weather conditions the blossom will be scented
