notes

Used to soften any landscape, Stipa tenuissima, also known as Stipa tenuifolia, is a graceful ornamental grass. In summer it bears abundant feathery panicles that sway in the breeze and are very popular for dried arrangements or left as a winter food source for hungry birds.

Insights

This magnificent plant is perfect for introducing movement. It makes a real statement as a specimen, or plant in a sunny mixed perennial border against a darker background where the plumes can be seen above other plants. It pairs particularly well with the bright colours of heleniums, alliums or salvias.

Care

Comb through in spring (wear gloves as the leaf edges are sharp) to remove any dead growth. If the plant is flopping or starting to look messy, cut back hard in late spring or early summer. It does self seed.
