notes
An excellent alternative to box, a Taxus baccata clipped pyramid, as a single specimen or en masse, makes a statement in any garden, especially during the winter. The attractive, dense evergreen foliage of yew makes it ideal for topiary and the clipped, sculptural results are widely used, punctuating formal parterres or adding structure and interest to informal gardens.
Insights

Traditionally, yew was planted in churchyards to prevent livestock having access to the poisonous seeds of the berries, while at the same encouraging the growth of a timber that was prized for making longbows, so effective in the Middle Ages. Taxus baccata is a recipient of the RHS AGM (Award of Garden Merit), for all round excellence.
